Two Ways to Keep Your Guard Up
There are two ways to protect yourself, and from the outside, they seem opposite.
One moves away. Stops sharing things, responds more briefly, starts keeping track internally. Doesn’t argue: just notes. Each entry organized, dated, ready in case it’s needed one day. It protects itself by disappearing inward.
The other moves closer. Doesn’t distance itself from anyone: asks questions, shows interest, stays until the end of the conversation. And it notes everything down. It protects itself by getting deeper in, because from closer up, you see better.
They seem like opposing attitudes. They do the same thing. Both have decided that information is what keeps them safe, and both pay the same price: they’re never fully in the conversation because part of them is working.
Almost no one is entirely one or the other. Most switch methods depending on who they’re with, and usually reserve the quieter approach for the people who matter most to them.
